This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
